Radiation and Nuclear safety Authority of Finland

Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority’s (STUK) key task is to supervise the use of radiation and nuclear energy in Finland. STUK oversees that all operators comply with the common rules. Our field of supervision is extensive.

Our activities cover natural radiation from radon to cosmic radiation and solar UV radiation. This includes nuclear facilities, nuclear materials, and nuclear waste, as well as the use of radiation in healthcare, industry, and research, among other areas. Non-ionizing radiation is also part of our remit, including lasers and solariums, certain cosmetic applications, and even mobile phones.

STUK’s supervision is based on researched information, so, it is important for us that radiation safety research is of a high standard. For this reason, we work together with both Finnish and foreign universities and research institutes.

We measure radon levels and radioactivity from construction materials and industrial products, food and environmental samples, drinking water and other samples according to customers’ needs.

Independent expert

The Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) is an independent authority and expert organisation. We provide people with objective radiation safety information so that they can understand what is hazardous and what is not.

We make invisible radiation visible and understandable.

We participate in international cooperation between authorities and are a highly esteemed radiation safety expert around the world. We also cooperate extensively with Finnish authorities and stakeholders.

Through our services, we also help authorities in other countries to develop radiation safety in different sectors. A high level of safety around the world also increases safety in Finland.

We participate in the development of radiation and nuclear energy legislation and issue detailed regulations and monitor compliance with them.

Readiness

STUK’s tasks also include preparing for exceptional situations that threaten STUK’s operations or affect our sector. We have 24-hour emergency services for radiation hazard situations, and we act as qualified experts in hazardous situations.

With regard to radiation hazard situations, STUK supports all other authorities and issues radiation-related recommendations for protection measures. STUK also plays an important role in the prevention of radiation hazard situations. STUK continuously monitors the situation picture, i.e. what is happening in Finland and abroad and whether we need to take some action.
