Practice that causes exposure to natural radiation

The Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) monitors activities that expose people to natural radiation. In activities involving exposure to natural radiation, workers or the general public may be exposed to higher than normal levels of natural radiation.

Radiation practice that causes exposure to natural radiation may be

  • Working in areas where the radon concentration of air is significantly high,
  • Delivering water for household consumption to consumers, when the water’s concentration of radioactive materials is higher than normal,
  • Manufacturing or import of building materials from outside the EU or transfer within the EU, that contain a higher amount of natural radioactive materials than normal,
  • Mining
  • The management, use, storage and recovery of materials and waste containing natural radioactive substances,
  • Aviation
