MetroPOEM project

Metrology for the harmonisation of measurements of environmental pollutants in Europe Measurements of environmental pollutants are developed and harmonised in a new three-year project, funded by The European Partnership on Metrology.

Project is called Metrology for the harmonisation of measurements of environmental pollutants in Europe (MetroPOEM) and it aims to enable and to harmonise measurement methods for the detection and characterisation of both radioactive isotopes and stable polluting elements. The project supports the EU Green Deal that aims to progress towards a zero-pollution toxic free environment. The consortium comprises 22 European research institutes and universities from 13 different countries. The project started 1st of October 2022.

MetroPOEM will deliver validated and traceable analytical approaches for the analysis of the concentration of pollutants, as well as determining the source and monitoring any contamination of pollutants through isotope ratio measurements. Mass spectrometry is a key method for non-radioactive polluting elements determination and of increasing importance for long-lived radionuclides.

This project will bridge the gap between traditional radiometric measurements and mass spectrometry and will establish new tools for tracing pollutants. By developing new reference materials and SI-traceable measurement procedures the project aims to significantly reduce measurement uncertainties and detection limits with an immediate impact for tracking pollution sources by commonly available mass spectrometers.
