PrISMA: Preparatory activities to support implementation of quality and safety of medical ionising radiation applications in future EU projects

The Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) is participating in the EU-supported PrISMA project (Preparatory activities to support Implementation of quality and Safety of Medical ionising radiation Applications). The aim of the project is to prepare new projects for the coming years to improve the quality and safety of medical ionising radiation applications. PrISMA is part of the EU4health Programme's implementation plan SAMIRA (Strategic Agenda for Medical Ionising Radiation Applications).

Main objectives of PrISMA

- to map the relevant actors in Member States and conduct network activities to promote future initiatives;

- to jointly produce a proposal for a future Joint Action in the area of quality and safety of medical applications of ionising radiation, including objectives, scope and activities.

PrISMA will build a broad network of relevant stakeholders who will collaborate to set the goals, scope, and activities of the upcoming Joint Action Ultimately, the successful implementation of PrISMA and the future Joint Action will result in a sustainable, high-quality, and safe use of medical ionising radiation for the benefit of European citizens.

The work is carried out in five work packages (WP):

  • WP 1: Project management and coordination
  • WP 2: Sharing and communication of results
  • WP 3: Impact assessment
  • WP 4: Creation of networks to ensure continuity
  • WP 5: Technical work (planning of future projects)

STUK's role

STUK participates in WPs 1, 4 and 5. STUK plays an important role in PrISMA, as it heads work package 5 on developing the content of future projects. In addition, STUK is involved in building the network, for example through HERCA (Heads of the European Radiological Protection Competent Authorities).
